Voice and video calls
When you have a Live link with a contact, you can start a voice or video call from the chat header.
What you'll need
- A contact with status Live (pair first if needed — Talk now).
- Microphone permission (voice). Camera permission as well (video).
- A secure context (
httpsorlocalhost) in the browser.
Start a call
- Open a contact chat while the peer status is Live.
- Tap the voice or video button in the chat header.
- Allow camera / microphone permissions if the browser or OS asks.
- Stay on the call screen until you hang up.
Calls ride the same WebRTC session as live messaging. If you are not Live, pair first — see Live vs offline.
Voice vs video
| Kind | Needs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | Microphone | Quick talk without camera |
| Video | Microphone + camera | Face-to-face |
You can switch only by starting the kind you want from the header buttons (hang up first if you are already in a call).
Call history
- Open Calls in the app navigation (bottom or side nav — the Calls screen, not a separate “tab inside chat”).
- Browse past voice and video entries.
- Tap an entry for details when offered.
On builds that expose the route directly, call history lives at /calls/.
What you should see
- While ringing / connected, an in-call UI with hang-up.
- Afterward, a new row under Calls.
If something goes wrong
- Buttons disabled: you are not Live — pair again.
- Permission denied: open browser or OS settings and allow camera / mic for Glitr.
- One-way audio: check mute on both sides; see Troubleshooting.

For the curious
Calls use the same WebRTC peer connection as live chat. There is no separate “Glitr call server” holding media. See the live-and-WebRTC notes under Technical → Security audit if you need deeper detail.
