Welcome to Glitr. This page is the shortest path from “I just opened the app” to “I’m chatting with someone I trust.”
Glitr is a private messenger. There is no Glitr account and no phone-number directory. Your chats live on this device, and you can optionally back them up in a git repository you own.
What you'll need
- A phone, tablet, or computer with a modern browser (or a desktop / mobile install).
- An encryption password you can remember — Glitr uses it to seal data on this device. Write it down; nobody can recover it for you.
- Someone to chat with (a second device or a friend), when you are ready to send a first message.
Checklist
Work through these in order. Skip steps you have already done.
- Open or install Glitr — Install the app if you want a desktop or phone package; otherwise open the web app.
- Start on this device (or connect a mailbox) — see Choose your path below.
- Set your profile — display name and handle. Edit your profile.
- Add a contact — Talk now (live pair) or Add a contact (git URL).
- Send a first message — Your first conversation and Send and receive.
- (Optional) Attach a mailbox backup — Connect your repository and Git remotes.
- Meet Dan-EL — the on-device assistant. Tap the sparkles icon, or open the AI page. In-app assistant.
Choose your path
| Path | Best when | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Talk now | You want to chat right now, both of you are online | Talk now |
| Own a mailbox | You want messages to arrive even when someone is offline, or you want a backup you control | Your first conversation |
You can start with Talk now and attach remotes later. Both paths use the same chats, contacts, and profile screens.
